Edinburgh Away Guide

All roads lead to Murrayfield – so here is the MRSC guide

All roads lead to Murrayfield – so here is the MRSC guide

Next weekend we will take to land, air and sea as we once again adorn the red of our Province and march towards Edinburgh; one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.

From the Old Town’s picturesque jumble of medieval buildings piled high along the Royal Mile to the modern new town we could think of no better venue for the quarter final tussle against a resurgent Edinburgh.

While a city well known to any veteran of Rugby circles – we have composed a tidy weekend away guide to aid your journey.

Getting to the Ground:

Murrayfield is easily accessible by bus, tram and foot from Princes Street. It is three stops west of the Princes Street tram stop; served by Lothian buses 12, 22, 26 and 31; or about a 40-minute walk.

Murrayfield is a 67,000-seater stadium and Edinburgh’s average attendance hovers around 6,000 annually while the sales for our game are sitting well above 30,000 tickets.

This is why it is essential to wear Red, bring extra flags if you have them and be prepared to have a sore throat as we create an amazing red army atmosphere to support the team in such a large stadium.

You can find all the info you need for directions here.

Top 5 bits to do:

Edinburgh Castle: At the top of the Royal Mile, this imposing fortress is an active military installation and a fascinating visit for learning about the History of Edinburgh and Scotland.

Holyrood Palace: The other end of the Royal Mile is the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyrood House. A great visit to find out more about both modern and olden times Scotland.

Mary King’s Close: In the middle of the Royal Mile (but underneath the Royal Exchange) is an old bricked up street named Mary King’s Close, where visitors can enter and explore the 17th century tenements. Learn what it was like to live in Scotland’s 17th century tenements.

Going out: Starting from Malone’s, walking east up the Grass market, and under George IV Bridge onto the Cow gate you will pass dozens of bars (including several Irish pubs), taverns and clubs which are usually busy and offer a fantastic atmosphere, a generous helping of live music and sufficient chip shops to keep you fed and watered.

Restaurants: For more refined dining, we recommended you consider heading north of Prince’s Street and to explore the lanes around Rose St, George St and Hill St where you will find a good blend of cheap and cheerful eateries and haute cuisine establishments.

MRSC Meeting Point:

We have connected with a number of popular bars and night venues is that we have used before to host the gathering of the Red Army – please find details below:

There will be a 10% discount on all Guinness products in the following bars: (All of these bars have terrific food menus) MRSC meeting designated meeting point – Dropkick Murphy’s – 7 Merchant St, Edinburgh EH1 2QD (Late night venue & Live Music – BBQ food across the weekend)

  • Ryan’s Bar 2-4 Hope St, Edinburgh EH2 4DB
  • City Cafe 19 Blair St, Edinburgh EH1 1QR
  • Tiles Bar 1 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh EH2 2BD
  • Theatre Royal 25-27 Greenside Place, Edinburgh EH1 3AA
  • The Golden Rule  30 Yeaman Pl, Edinburgh EH11 1B
  • The Three Sisters 139 Cowgate, Edinburgh EH1 1JS
  • Malone’s Irish bar at 242 Morrison Street

The game:

This promises to be a ferocious clash with Edinburgh having developed a real hard nosed edge since the appointment of Richard Cockerill. One of their major strengths is in the back row where Hamish Watson is joined by offload king Viliame Mata and the returning John Barclay. Their tussle with the Munster backrow will be worth the admission price alone and should go a long way to deciding the outcome.

We look forward to welcoming the Red Army in Edinburgh!
