Letter To Members Regarding Musgrave Park

Dear Member, As you will be aware, Munster Rugby are actively seeking to redevelop Musgrave Park in an effort to increase capacity and therefore attract more games to the venue. You will be aware that the number of Magners league matches scheduled for Musgrave Park this season has been reduced to three. We believe that the reason is substantially financial with matches in Thomond Park generating substantially more income due to increased capacity and secondly because the facility is not of a standard required. Musgrave Park has sold out all Magners League matches for the past few seasons. Accordingly, there is a demand for matches and a demand for additional capacity. Munster have an uncommon set-up with two venues. It has had its detractors in the past but it does help with a sense of bonding the entire province rather than concentrating on one venue. As a Supporters Club, we believe that the dual venue helps strengthen the overall support and so favour the retention of two venues. However, we also realise that there are financial constraints with the current capacity of Musgrave Park. We as a club would like to see Musgrave Park redeveloped. To this end, we, as a committee, will write to the planning office on behalf of the Munster Rugby Supporters Club, seeking a favourable outcome on any future planning application and subsequently rezoning as required. We are advised that Munster Rugby are currently preparing a new application to construct a new stand on the east side of the venue. Planning has been granted previously for the construction of a new West Stand but refusal of the application for an apartment/commercial development on the Kinsale Road meant that the funding required for the West Stand could not be raised. We are aware that Munster have considered the municipal option provided the City Council could assist with outside match and training facilities for the tenant clubs i.e. Dolphin and Sunday
