Limerick International Sevens Tournament

From Limerick Leader PLANS have been unveiled for the newly devised Limerick International Sevens Tournament – the tournament, modelled on the annual Kinsale Sevens, will take place every Easter. It is expected that 1,500 will be attracted each year to the tournament that will include both the Rugby Union and Rugby League codes. The Limerick International Sevens Tournament (LIST) will take place every Easter weekend for an initial five years commencing in 2009 – April 10-12. LIST consists of six divisions and is open to male and female, under-21s, over-35s and an open age group. It is hoped to have 24 teams per division and a total of 144 teams, with all guaranteed to play a minimum of six matches. Divisional qualifying matches will be staged and hosted at various grounds around the City – Garryowen FC, Limerick Institute of Technology, Bohemians RFC, University of Limerick, Old Crescent RFC, Shannon RFC. The semi-finals and finals in both the plate and the main competition in all divisions will be played at Thomond Park. Thomond Park is to act as the centrepiece of the tournament, but the quarter finals of the Heineken Cup are scheduled for the weekend of April 10-12 in 2009 and Munster could yet have a home game, which may lead to some changes in the proposed programme of events. The tournament is open to all accredited rugby union and rugby league clubs and there is no limit to the number of sides each club can be represent by. The launch of the tournament, which was initiated by Shannon Development as part of their sports tourism strategy, took place this Tuesday at a press conference in Hospitality Suites of Thomond Park. Marcus Buckley Bennion, Tournament Organiser was one of the speakers. "The appeal to any Welshman, Scotsman or Englishman not to mention fellow Irishmen to represent their own club in one of the world’s most famous rugby cites is enormous. Add in the fact that we will be catering for both rugby union and rugby league and the Limerick International Sevens has the potential to draw participants from a very wide pool," said the Tournament Organiser. Munster Rugby Development Officer, Ed Daly has been appointed Tournament Organiser, with Munster Rugby Women’s Development Officer, Brigid Ryan as an assistant.
