Qualification – Permutations

Many members are enquiring as to what Munster need from their match with London Wasps this Saturday to guarantee progressing through to the knock-out stages. Here is our understanding of matters. The ERC Website outlines details of the qualification rules: CLUBS IN THE SAME POOL (ii) if two or more Clubs are equal on points and the Clubs are in the same Pool, then qualification / ranking will be based on the matches played between the Clubs concerned: (a) the Club which has earned the most number of match points from the matches (b) the Club which has scored the most tries in the matches (c) the Club with the best aggregate points difference from the matches (iii) if still unresolved qualification / ranking will be based on: (a) the number of tries scored in all Pool matches (b) aggregate points difference from all Pool matches IF LONDON WASPS WIN OR DRAW London Wasps qualify as group winners. Munster do not qualify. IF CLERMONT BEAT LLANELLI AND SCORE A BONUS POINT Clermont would then be on 19 points and so Munster currently on 15 points and London Wasps on 18, the number of points taken by Munster and London Wasps next Saturday. Munster win without a bonus point but Wasps get two bonus points London Wasps qualify as group winnenrs. Munster win and neither team get a bonus Munster would be on 19 points with ASM Clermont Auvergne. Wasps would remain on 18. As Munster have 6 points from the direct head to head matches and Clermont have 4, Munster would qualify and Clermont would be waiting on other results to possibly qualify as a runner-up. Munster win and score 4 tries and Wasps get no more than 1 bonus point Munster qualify as group winners on 20 points Munster win without a bonus point and Wasps get one bonus point All three teams are on 19 points but the min-league in direct matches would be: Team, MPoints, Tries, Points Munster, 11, 8+, 78+ Wasps, 9, 8,+, 76+ Clermont, 9, 7 93 Based upon match points in the mini-league, Munster would qualify regardless of tries and points scored this Saturday. Munster win with a bonus but Wasps get two bonus points Both teams would be level on points in the mini-league of the two clubs with 20 and so the parameters as set out below (where Clermont do not get a bonus) will apply. IF CLERMONT BEAT LLANELLI AND DO NOT SCORE A BONUS POINT Clermont will be on 18 points and cannot qualify as group winners so Munster win without a bonus point but Wasps get two bonus points London Wasps qualify as group winnenrs. Munster win and neither team get a bonus Munster would be on 19 and would be group winners. Wasps would remain on 18. Munster win and score 4 tries and Wasps get no more than 1 bonus point Munster qualify as group winners on 20 points Munster win without a bonus point and Wasps get one bonus point OR Munster win with a bonus and Wasps get two bonus points Both teams are on 19 points (or 20) but the min-league in direct matches would be: Team MPoints Tries, Points Munster, 5(6), 2+, 23+ Wasps, 5(6), 2+, 24+ Using the criteria outlined by the ERC, then as both temas are level on match points in the direct match:

  • It will come down to tries scored by both teams in the head-to-head which is currently tied at 2 each; if that remains the case
  • It will come down to points scored in the head-to-head which Munster are currently one point behind
  • If Munster win by 1 point and tries scored is equal then Wasps will qualify having scored more tries in the group So our synopsis is
  • Munster first of all need to win and ensure that Wasps do not get 2 bonus points more than Munster from the game
  • Regardless of outcome of Clermont game, if Munster get one more bonus point than Wasps, Munster qualify
  • But if Clermont get a bonus against Llanelli Scarlets, and if Wasps get a bonus and Munster do not, Munster will qualify
  • However if Clermont do not get a bonus, and
  • if Wasps do not get a bonus, Munster qualify
  • Or if Wasps and Munster both get one bonus point, Munster qualify
  • But if Wasps get one more bonus point than Munster, Munster need to score more tries than Wasps on Saturday to qualify
  • But if teams score the same number of tries, Munster would need to win by more than one point to qualify
  • As if Munster only win by one point, Wasps and Munster would be level on Match Points, Tries and Points in the mini-league but as Wasps have scored more tries in the group, they would qualify Filed by Tony McGrath 150108
